According to a survey from Gallup, nearly 6 in 10 millennials say that work-life balance is important to them. However, that study also found that only 5% of millennials are thriving in the five elements of well-being (purpose, social, financial, community, and physical).
In today’s culture, a healthy work-life balance can be tricky to find. In the majority of industries, technology makes employees accessible to work at all times. Shutting off the notifications and enjoying life outside of work can be difficult. The temptation to work extra hours and stay above the competition can be high. That being said, experts agree: the compounding stress from a never-ending workday is damaging. It can hurt relationships, health, job performance and overall happiness.
Ryan Kelly, marketing and communications manager at Plaza Home Mortgage and YMPA member, said that finding a work-life balance, while it’s tough, is important.
“It’s definitely hard. As a full-time employee, MBA student, husband, and father to a toddler, time management is as important as it’s ever been for me. But you do what you can to find time and fit it all in,” Kelly said.
In order to live your best life, there are steps you can take.
“I try to give it my all within the moment and allocate time to get everything done. For example, when I’m at work, that’s my focus. When I’m at home, my family is where I put my attention. When my son falls asleep at night is when I open up my laptop and work on school work. And then I repeat day after day,” Kelly said.
Other tips include building down time for rest into your schedule that doesn’t get compromised unless there’s an emergency, scheduling time to do at least one activity you enjoy a day, and savoring weekends and vacations without bringing work along. While there are many other tips out there, it’s important to start somewhere.
“I see the light at the end of the tunnel with my schooling, as I’ll eventually complete my MBA degree. Weekends are where you get a break and are able to relax a bit more,” Kelly added.
