Growing up and listening to the words FHA, VA, JUMBO, etc., while doing homework in my dads office was the perfect combination of why I never wanted to be in the mortgage industry. Not only was it the confusing acronyms that I had no interest in learning, but also, I was part of a generation that experienced the biggest housing and financial collapse in years. Still, with all the negativity that surrounded this industry, here I am at 24 and working at the same mortgage company for the last 5 years. I had my doubts within those 5 years if this truly was the place for me, but I would like to share three reasons why I will now never leave this industry.
First, the relationships you create and the people you meet are like no other. It is great to run into so many people throughout the course of the year that you can relate to. These are the individuals who have made me successful in this industry and who have helped create the Young Mortgage Professionals Association. These people can be your clients, your vendors, and even your competitors at times. You will find that they all have one common interest and that is a passion for the mortgage industry. Of course you will run into the old salty industry guys, but they are the ones who have created the negative perception on this industry. These poor guys are still dwelling on the past. Surrounding yourself with positive and influential people will create a lasting industry friendship now and for years to come.
Second, find a company that lets you be who you are. I was lucky enough to find an amazing mentor that empowered me and allowed me to grow within the company. He wanted me to share ideas and strategies at times when I thought I was too inexperienced to do so. Little did I know, he was actually learning from me because of the technological knowledge a millennial can bring to the table. He truly has given me the confidence to be who I am in the industry and lead by example, even at the age of 24. I believe having a mentor in this industry is so important because it creates this drive in you to be just as successful as they are. If that mentor exemplifies what it means to be an employee of that company, you know you found the perfect fit.
Lastly, this industry has an endless amount of opportunity. I have heard a lot of millennials complain about this industry because it does not offer an opportunity to grow and is only based off commission. That is an opportunity in itself to go out and educate others of how many sectors of the industry there truly are. Yes, some people may be born to do sales, but there are so many areas throughout the loan process that will give you the opportunity to specialize in that area and grow. YMPA has gathered all the sectors of the industry from real estate agent to escrow officer because they are all as equally important. The goal of the loan process is to ensure the end customer has the finest experience in the most protected environment and I believe this Association carries out this message perfectly.
In the short one-year term of the YMPA, it has displayed all three of these reasons of why I will never leave this industry. I am lucky to have met so many amazing people and companies through the Association. I am happy to share what a great culture and environment the company I work for has. And I am motivated to go out and refuel the industry because of the endless opportunities it has to offer. These examples have showed me that this Association has what it takes to change the mortgage industry perception from negative to positive and I am happy to be a part of it.
