A commonly asked question I receive when meeting people is how did I end up being a Mortgage Loan Originator at the ripe young age of 23 years old?
If I had to narrow it down to a single quality, I would have to say that my drive is inspired when people tell me I can’t do something. I moved through the ranks of banking very quickly, going from my first job as a part time teller in a small town to a Mortgage Loan Originator in less than 5 years’ time. I can assure you that every single step of the way I was met with people who told me “You’re too young” – “You don’t have enough experience” – “You don’t have a degree” and I would take these comments and use them as fuel to my fire to prove them wrong. When I started in banking, I had no trajectory to end up as a Mortgage Loan Originator. To be honest, it was just another job at the time. However, I always would look at positions above me and think to myself “I could do that job!” If the company I was working for at the time wouldn’t provide the opportunity to advance to that position, I would go find another one that would. In 3 years, I went from Part-time Teller, Full-time Teller, Customer Service Rep, Customer Service Manager, Loan Originator I, Loan Originator II, and finally Mortgage Loan Originator. Looking back, I don’t know why I was so driven to move up in my positions; I really can only attribute it to the constant co-workers and bosses telling me that I couldn’t do it.
I’ve never held a single position for more than 12 months until I reached my current position of Mortgage Loan Originator, which I have been for over 2 years now. I have always enjoyed the aspects of working with customers to help them achieve a goal, and to me, I can’t think of anything more important than buying a house! Whether it is their first home, second home, investment property, or retirement home, it is such an exciting experience! This is where their children will grow up, this is where you will entertain your friends and family. For most people, this is where you will spend the vast majority of your time, and money! Having the opportunity to work every day helping my clients achieve their dreams is the best gift I could have ever hoped for. I truly love every aspect of my job, from the easy closings that go through without a hitch, to the more complex ones that take strategic planning and careful organization, being there to walk my clients through the process step by step. Getting them from point A to point B is definitely the job that I was meant to do in this life!
So how does any of this tie into the YMPA? Well, one day I was sitting in my office and I received an email from Scott Compton inviting me to a lunch about 45 minutes away from my office, the title of the email said that it was for “young mortgage professionals” which immediately caught my attention, as the average age of a Mortgage Loan Originator is 54! It was here that I met Josh, J.D. & Brendan (Our board of directors), as well as Scott Compton, Paul Beatty & Mark Sidoti (Our board of advisors). It was during this meeting that the YMPA was born, the energy and excitement in that room that day was like something I had never experienced before. I knew then that not only did this industry offer me my dream job, but there’s other people out there just like me who love and adore this industry and want to take the steps to bring others into the industry, and make it better than it has ever been before! I cannot express in words how proud I am to be a part of this amazing organization. If you don’t wake up every morning excited to go to work, amped up to go make a difference in people’s lives, please join the YMPA and check out what we are all about!
