Whatever you choose to call it; just know that it is, in my opinion, the greatest career path out there. I say this as a 26-year-old man who came into the industry only 5 years ago. I started working part-time as a loan processor for my father’s company while I was going to school full-time finishing up my Bachelor’s Degree.
In all honesty, I never thought I would find myself working in this business. My degree was not necessarily geared towards a career in finance, but at 21 years old I found myself sorting through loan approvals, calling borrowers on the phone with nervous hands and a racing mind, thinking about what I would say in order to get the conditions I needed to make this loan close. Getting comfortable on the phone and through email took time. Over time, I gained the confidence and knowledge to realize that I understood the loan process. I understood that what I was doing was going to help the borrower get to the closing table as efficiently as possible, so that they can live out the dream of homeownership. Obviously, seeing how their loan was in process, being at the closing table as soon as possible was something they desired.
Confidence, knowledge of the process, and the understanding of knowing that what I was doing was helping our clients, created a sense of serenity about the job. The nerves began to fade away (trust me they still pop up here and there), but nowadays, I like to think of nervousness and excitement as the same emotion. Before I knew it, relationships were forming amongst myself, and the lenders we used as a brokerage. Things clicked into place and a passion for what I was doing grew at an exponential rate.
Fast forward a few years later and I am now a licensed loan originator producing my own loans, building my own relationships, and creating a life for myself in a career that I am overly passionate for. I am told today by everyone that knows me, “I could never see you doing anything else than what you’re doing right now.” I couldn’t agree with them more. It provides unlimited opportunity and reward, while giving me an opportunity to enjoy each day. Isn’t that what everyone wishes for in their career?
Every day I get to interact with people. Some of those people are the people I help, my borrowers, and some of those people are the ones who help me, the underwriters, account executives, attorneys, etc. These relationships I’ve built started from nothing, but have grown into what we in the YMPA call Strategic Partners. All of us work together for one end goal, to create the best environment for our borrowers, so that they can have the finest experience when going through the mortgage loan process.
I always understood that concept, but it never became as imbedded in my mind as it did when we formed the YMPA. By being on the Board of Directors, by taking the time to create this association, by being introduced to all of our Strategic Partners and Affiliates who have helped us thus far, I have learned the true importance of relationships in this industry. Almost more importantly, I have met the people who value those relationships as much as I do. With those values in mind amongst the people I work with it is nearly impossible not to have an environment for the borrower that is the finest. It is something I am very proud to be a part of and am so excited to watch our following continue to grow. We can all impact this industry for the better, one YMPA member at a time.
